There is a lot to be worrying about this term: exams, coursework, last minute internships applications, and, inevitably, a lack of constructive extracurricular activities leaving your CV looking a little on the short side. On Saturday Week 8, a joint society event will be taking place in Bowland North, involving over twelve societies. The event provides you with the opportunity to get involved and provide some physical evidence for the skills section of your application form. The societies who have helped to organise the day include Natural Science, Bright Futures, Entrepreneurs, Consulting, and Photography, amongst others. Though don’t worry if you aren’t a member of any of these societies, anyone is welcome to participate. Bring your friends!
Attendees will be divided into small groups, with members from a mixture of societies and with a variety of skill sets. They will then be allocated a seminar room as their base. The challenge itself will last for four hours and the activity will remain top secret until the day! Once the four hours is up, everyone will go off for a tea break, before re-grouping together in the Elizabeth Livingston lecture theatre where the judges will announce the winner. The event will ensure students leave with concrete experience in using skills they may not normally employ. For anyone who’s CV is looking a little bare, this event provides the opportunity to demonstrate your skills and learn from other members of your team. There will also be free popcorn provided for all attendees – as if you didn’t have enough reasons to be there already.
The judges include Rob Ellias, the Innovation Team Leader at Lancaster University’s Innovation Hub and Paul Foster, the Development Manager at the Federation of Small Businesses (www.fsb.org.uk). The winning team will receive a £250 prize. The best individual will receive a £50 prize too!
Following the event, Grizedale college have kindly reserved the top floor of the bar for those who attended the event, so everyone will take a quick trip down the spine for a few drinks afterwards.
